Zone Six is a personal sci-fi and fantasy blog written by Hutch Morzaria. This page explains what information the site collects, why, and what you can do about it. I keep it short because the site collects very little.

What the site collects

Comments. If you leave a comment, the site stores the name, email address and website you enter, your comment, and your IP address. The email address is never shown publicly. If you tick the box to save your details, a cookie stores them in your browser so you don’t have to retype them next time. Comments are checked for spam by Akismet, a service that receives the comment text, your name, email address and IP address for that purpose.

Visitor statistics. I use Google Analytics, through the Site Kit plugin, and Jetpack Stats to see which posts people read and how they found them. These tools set cookies and record things like your approximate location, device and browser, and the pages you view. I use this only to understand which posts are working.

Ads. The site shows ads served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technology to show ads and to measure them, and may show ads based on your earlier visits to this and other websites. You can manage personalised advertising at Google’s ad settings, and you can learn more about how Google uses data from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Email newsletter. If you sign up for the newsletter, I collect your email address, and your first name if you give it. This is sent to MailerLite, the service that stores the list and sends the emails. I only use it to email you the things you signed up for. You can unsubscribe at any time with the link at the bottom of every email, and your address is removed from the active list when you do.

Hosting and logs. The company that hosts the site keeps standard server logs that include IP addresses and the pages requested, mostly for security and troubleshooting.

Cookies

Cookies are small files your browser stores. On this site they come from comments (if you tick the save-my-details box), Google Analytics, Jetpack Stats and Google AdSense. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site still works without them, though you may need to re-enter your details when commenting.

Sharing your information

I don’t sell your information. It is shared only with the services named above, and only so they can do the job described here. I may also disclose information if the law requires it.

How long I keep it

Comments stay until I delete them or you ask me to. Newsletter subscribers stay on the list until they unsubscribe. Analytics and ad data are kept by Google and Jetpack under their own retention settings.

Your choices

You can ask what I hold about you, ask me to correct it, or ask me to delete it, including a comment you left or your place on the newsletter list. Email me at hutchm@zone-six.net and I’ll deal with it. If you are in the UK or EU, you also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

Links to other sites

Posts here link to other websites. I don’t control their privacy practices, so check their policies before sharing anything.

Children

The site is not aimed at children under 13, and I don’t knowingly collect information from them.

Changes

If I change how the site handles information, I’ll update this page and its date.
